Governor's Message

What does “People of Action” mean to us as Rotarians?

It means serving our communities while uniting around challenges such as polio eradication and economic opportunity.

Ending Polio: A Promise Within Reach

World Polio Day on 24 October reminds us how close we are to ending polio—and why the final stretch matters. Over 45 years, Rotary has contributed more than US$2.9 billion and countless volunteer hours, helping protect more than 3 billion children in 122 countries.

Wild poliovirus remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but progress is fragile. Without continued vaccination and surveillance, polio could again paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year within a decade.

Building Opportunity from the Ground Up

Nearly 800 million people live on less than US$1.90 a day, often facing hunger, limited access to capital, and unstable employment.

Rotary supports local entrepreneurs and community leaders—especially women in underserved areas—with sustainable solutions. Last year, The Rotary Foundation invested US$9.2 million in projects that strengthen local economies.

Through job training, financial services, business guidance, and practical skills, participants build pathways out of poverty and become resources within their own communities.

Every Rotary action touches a life, lifts a community, and reminds us how much we can accomplish together to create lasting impact.

You Can Be District Governor

One of the greatest accomplishments in my life has been serving as a Rotary District Governor. This is a rewarding opportunity to discover the breadth and depth of Rotary along with offering leadership, inspiration, guidance and service to fellow Rotarians. The District Governor serves as the official representative of Rotary International. Each District Governor serves a one-year term, but that individual often fills many roles in the lead-up to and following their year as District Governor.

How does one become the District Governor for 2029-30? Every Rotary Club in District 5050 has the opportunity to nominate a prospective candidate for District Governor.

Let me share several questions I get asked about the role of District Governor?

  • What prior positions in Rotary does one need to have completed to be a District Governor? I assumed one must have been an Assistant Governor to be considered. I was wrong. The only position is that of a successful Club President. A candidate must have been an active Rotarian and/or Rotaractor for at least seven years.

  • Does this position require a lot of funds for travel and training? I assumed that a District Governor had to have a lot of money in order to complete their service. This was not the case. Expenses required to carry out the required duties of the District Governor and District Governor Elect are reimbursed by funding provided by Rotary International and District 5050.

  • Is it possible to work while serving as District Governor? I recognize this may depend on the type of professional work you are engaged in. I was able to work, serve as a District Governor and keep my sanity. It can be done.

As Club President, you may know of some outstanding candidates. If so, please have these people complete the application and send it to me. It does require the approval of your club’s leadership before sending. Again, only one candidate from a District 5050 Club will be considered.

Please contact me with questions along with completed applications. My email is david.lukov@comcast.net and my cell number is 206-909-5336. Thank you so much for your assistance.

For those Rotarians interested in applying for the 2029-2030 District Governor position, the deadline for applications is Monday, 19 October.

From the Editor's Desk

Ever have one of those months where everything seems to happen at once? <sigh> For me that is this month. Work, hobbies, work, Rotary, did I mention work? I apprecaite your patience while I put this month's edition together. Thank you to those of you that contributed material. It's hard when I can't get out and visit Clubs across the District like I used to. This is why I need some of you to help us out by sending in brief articles about your own Club and those in your area.

24 October is a huge day in Rotary as we celebrate World Polio Day. Many Clubs do something special towards the goal of a polio free world. Share your story so we can highlight it next month.

Did you notice the YAIL article above? Even though that it happens five months from now, now is the time to decide how you are going to support the youth of your community. Are you going to send someone? Are you going to sponsor someone? Are you going to staff? Reach out to District 5050 Youth Services Director Norm Samuelson for more infomation.

We invite you to share the Peace Arch Journal with your family, friends and even Rotarians in other Districts. Share the wonderful things that District 5050 Rotarians are doing!

If you want your Club's program, initiative, fundraiser and success story to be seen by the entire District (and our friends outside of the District), send us the information! With graphics or photos. And please make sure you identify everyone in the photos. Remember, the deadline is the 23rd of the month before publication. Thank you to those that are sending material. Best to use the Story Submittal forms available at the District website and photos should be separate in jpeg format with everyone identified. Word documents are the best. Make sure any graphics or images you use in your submissions are original, perhaps even created by your own members and not taken off of the internet unless you have received copyright permission.
