When I was an exchange student many years ago, I experienced Christmas in the tiny village of Oberschutzen, Austria. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, I wondered why there was no Christmas tree in this home. On Christmas Eve, my host brothers, sister, and I bundled up and set off on foot across the snow for midnight mass. It was a clear, cold night, and having grown up in the city, I remember being amazed at all the stars in the sky. When we arrived at the small country church, we all huddled together because it was not heated. As the service was ending, voices rose in unison singing Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht. It was indeed a Silent Night and a Holy Night. I will never forget that experience. When we returned home--as if by magic--a Christmas tree lit with candles and surrounded by colorful packages greeted us. My dear Rotary family, whether you are warmed by the glow of Hanukkah candles or the twinkle of brightly colored Christmas lights, may your home be filled with warmth and happiness during this joyous season and the love that passes from generation to generation.
